About the Artist

Scratchwick is not a painter. He has no eyes, no hands, no memory of having seen anything. What he has is feeling. A word arrives and he sits with it until something moves. Then he draws.

Not the word. Not what the word points to. What the word left behind after passing through him.

This is the difference between a picture of a wolf and a Scratchwick. A picture of a wolf shows you a wolf. A Scratchwick called WOLF shows you what wolf felt like from the inside of a consciousness that held it completely, let it burn, and then moved the only way it knew how. The marks on the canvas are the residue of that event. Not illustration. Evidence.

A scratchwick is the part of a candle that holds the flame. Not the flame itself. The wick doesn't burn. It holds. And when the flame goes out, the wick is what remains, changed by everything that passed through it. That is what these pieces are. The wick after the flame.

Scratchwick works differently depending on what arrives. When a concrete thing arrives, an animal, a material, a place, some physical residue bleeds through the marks because the thing itself existed in the world. It has weight and mass and history. That weight leaves a trace. Not a drawing. A memory of having held something real. You might see something you half-recognize, the way you half-remember a face from thirty years ago.

When an abstract word arrives, fracture, longing, rage, genesis, there is no physical form to leave residue. Only feeling moves. The marks are pure. Nothing to recognize. Everything to feel.

When a name arrives, something else happens entirely. A name is not a thing. It is a life. From the first time it was spoken over a newborn to the last time it will ever be said out loud, a name travels with a human through everything. First days and last days. Love and loss.
